Welcome to Nagasaki

Nagasaki is located in the westernmost part of Japan, and comprises around 600 islands in total. From the rolling hills of Nagasaki city to the beautiful coastline of Sotome, Nagasaki has a distinct geography which is not found elsewhere in Japan.

During the self-imposed period of isolation, Nagasaki was the only port in Japan open to foreign ships. This unique history has created a legacy and tradition of welcoming foreigners and an acceptance of different cultures and customs. Interaction and acceptance of foreign cultures has shaped the history and the scenery of Nagasaki, and has even influenced the local cuisine.
