Greetings from the Dean

  • Tadashi TOJO
Dean, Faculty of Economics, Nagasaki University
  • Welcome to the homepage of the Faculty of Economics of Nagasaki University. The origins of our faculty lie in Nagasaki Higher Commercial School (NHCS) which was established in 1905. 1905 was the year the Russo-Japanese War ended, and the school in Nagasaki was established as the third public commercial school in Japan, after Tokyo Higher Commercial School (now Hitotsubashi University) and Kobe Higher Commercial School (now Kobe University). These schools were established one after the other at the very beginning of the 20th century. If we consider the reasons why these schools were established in those places at that time, we can clearly see them in the context of the rapid development of industry and economy that Japan was experiencing at the time.
  • There was rapid industrial growth, and this growth led to a rising demand for human resources equipped with the skills necessary for this new industrial sector. It is likely that a decision was made to foster large numbers of candidates capable of taking on executive roles through these schools, in order to provide commercial companies with managers. Interestingly, it was also at this time that business schools (graduate schools for management) began to spring up in the United States, in order to nurture a new generation of managers for US companies, which were swiftly increasing in scale.
  • Since this initial period, the NCHS (the name was changed to the Nagasaki College of Economics in 1944) which later on became the Faculty of Economics of Nagasaki University, has for over 100 years, continued to provide a steady stream of promising young talents into the very heart of industry, together with other commercial schools and faculties into which they developed. It would be no exaggeration to say that up until now we have played a key role in supporting the economic development of Japan with the provision of essential human resources.
  • Our faculty has a long and proud history. Having celebrated the centenary of our establishment, the faculty runs seven courses for undergraduates, namely, Economic Analysis and Policy, Economics and Law, International Relations, Finance, Economics and Management Information Systems, Management and Accounting, and Integrated Economics (evening sessions), whilst our Graduate School offers both Masters and Doctoral Programs. We are a large and dynamic faculty with a teaching staff of over 70 members.
  • The university is now an independent administrative entity. Against the backdrop of this important change, we should not allow ourselves to be satisfied with mere reminiscence of our illustrious history. Rather, we need to think back to our origins as a faculty, and reconsider how we can best continue to serve the Japanese society in the 21st century, by providing it with top caliber human resources for the next 100 years. We need to think about how we can foster a new Faculty and a more innovative Graduate School. I very much hope that this homepage will allow you to get to know us and our Faculty.
