Nagasaki Higashi High School students
participated in a special lecture
at the Faculty of Economics

Faculty of Economics

The Faculty of Economics hosted 16 members of Nagasaki Higashi High School's English club and 3 of their teachers to a special lecture on an alternative food for the future. In addition to the guests from Nagasaki Higashi High School, 2 Nagasaki University students were in attendance.

Professor Tom of the Center for Language Studies began with a discussion on global warming and introduced ways individuals can reduce the amount of greenhouse gases they emit. After the general discussion, the professor focused on one big contributor of global warming gases, eating farmed meat. He described how farmed meat is a leading cause of global warming because farm animals produce a lot of greenhouse gases and many forests are cleared to create farm land. Finally, he explained how many people are promoting the consumption of insects as an alternative to traditional meat such as beef or pork and shared its many good points. At the end of the lecture, Professor Tom provided a tasting of roasted crickets and protein bars made from cricket flour.

This lecture is part of a series of lectures held in English for Nagasaki Higashi High School, a Super Global High School (SGH), that began in 2014. The series was created to promote cooperation between the university and local high schools, expose high school and university students to American culture and provide an opportunity to study and communicate in English. International students from the university and high school participate from time-to-time, which give the students opportunity to not only study American culture, but other cultures as well.
